About Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA

History

Capitol Hill got its start in the 1870s when settlers in Seattle began clearing areas around the budding community for settlement. The original name for the community was Broadway Hill reflecting its location overlooking downtown Seattle and the name of the major thoroughfare the passed through. In 1891, James Moore, who was the key developer of the community, renamed the community. Legend has it, he had hoped to lure the state of Washington to move the state government from Olympia when he chose the name. Over the next several decades the neighborhood’s history would be tied directly to Seattle’s. As Seattle grew, so to did Capitol Hill.

The community has always contained some of Seattle’s most wealthy neighborhoods. There is even a location nicknamed “millionaire’s row”. In the 1960s the gay community of Seattle began to move into the neighborhood. The neighborhood today is still the heart of Seattle’s gay community.

Today

The neighborhood is one of Seattle’s most densely populated. It is famous for its gay and counterculture communities as well as its haven for the arts. Every year, the neighborhood is the site of Seattle’s Gay Pride Parade. Its location is minutes from the heart of downtown Seattle. The population is steadily growing and jobs are abundant.

Things to do

The neighborhood is known for its beautiful overlook of downtown Seattle. Therefore, there are several outdoor spots worth checking out that reflect this beauty. Volunteer Park, the Volunteer Park Water Tower, and the Volunteer Park Conservatory top the list. The water tower at the park goes back to 1907 and is a great spot to take in the neighborhood’s rich history. The city’s Asian Art Museum is located within the park itself. In addition there are several large green spaces and lookout points. If you come to Volunteer Park, you truly will see one of the most beautiful views of Seattle. There are other parks in the neighborhood worth checking out as well. These include the Cal Anderson and Bobby Morris Playfield, Kerry Park, Gas Works Park, Washington Park Arboretum, and Interlaken Park. The neighborhood is also the home of the Seattle Japanese Garden, which is one of the most well known Japanese Gardens in the Western Hemisphere.

From the neighborhood, all of Seattle is at your fingertips. You are only minutes from the most popular tourist sites such as the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. You are also really close to Seattle’s Waterfront Park, which is a wonderful place to check out as well as the Seattle Great Wheel. There are several museums and art galleries around the neighborhood as well. Some of these are the Frye Art Museum, the Museum of Pop Culture, the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of History and Industry, the Pacific Science Center, and the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience. The museums offerunique and exciting learning opportunities for people of all ages. There is also great shopping and dining experiences in the neighborhood. A definite place to check out near Capitol Hill is Pioneer Square. This plaza is historic and full of unique shopping and dining. You will easily find whatever you are looking for within minutes of wherever you are in the neighborhood.
