About Woodinville, WA

Woodinville is located in the northwest corner of Washington in King County, just east of Bothell. Situated on the edge of the Sammamish River and densely wooded, the scenery of Woodinville is the spitting image of what one pictures when they think of the state of Washington. In 2010, the population reached 10,938 residents, however there are many residents with Woodinvillle addresses that live in unincorporated parts of King
County.

History

Prior to its establishment, for years the area of Woodinville was home to the native Sammamish people. In 1871, the Woodin family traveled up the Sammamish river and decided to build a cabin on the water’s edge near what today is Woodinville. The Woodin family started to log timber and farm cattle. Quickly, a town built-up around the Woodin settlement. Susan Woodin served as the town’s first postmaster, running a post office out of the family cabin. Susan’s husband set up the town’s first general store.

Similar to many of the communities in King and nearby counties, the town began as a community of loggers. After the area was completely logged, Woodinville became a farming community in the early 20th century. After World War II, the growing community attracted many Seattlites, quickly developing into a Seattle suburb. In 1993, Woodinville was officially incorporated into the town of Bothell, with the majority of residents of the community voting “yes” in approval.

Today

Over fifty percent of the Woodinville residents are married families, according to the 2010 census. The community’s economy is a combination of light industry, retail, and tourism. In addition, the Woodinville wine country is a favorite tourist spot, located just 30 minutes outside of Seattle. The area has over 130 local wineries and tasting rooms, using grapes from vineyards located in Yakima Valley or Columbia Valley, located in Eastern Washington. Well-known wineries from the region include Chateau Saint Michelle, Silver Lake, and Columbia Winery. Chateau Saint Michelle was the first winery to open in the area in 1976. The wine country is home to two “Masters of Wine”, a title that there are only 25 current holders of in the United States. In April every year, the wine country is host to the “Passport to Woodinville” event which allows locals and tourists to taste wine from many of the local wineries for just one tasting fee. The area also attracts tourists with the Redhook Ale Brewery and famous Herbfarm restaurant. The community puts on many local yearly events including a summer concert series, a lights festival for the entire month of December, and a Summer outdoor movie series as the Redhook Brewery.

The city of Woodinville has been officially separated into 11 neighborhoods by the city government. The city has 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school, as well as several private schools. Most of the schools are part of the Northshore school district. The community is served by the local Sound Transit and King County Metro transit, allowing easy commutes for those living in the area and working in Seattle.
