About Cottage Lake, WA
History
The history of the region surrounding what is today the town of Cottage Lake, Washington goes back thousands of years. Native Americans had called this land home for that long. They survived and thrived on the abundance of the Sammamish Valley. European settlers began arriving in the 1870’s as a sort of outgrowth of the Puget Sound settlements. As more settlers began moving in the region for the budding logging industry, those who had lived there for the seclusion of the wilderness began to spread out. This was the case of Cottage Lake. The first family to move into the region was the Neilsen Family in 1876. They lived isolated in the region until 1891 when Ezra Jurey moved onto land along the lake.
The region began to grow in the 1880s as the Great Northern Railway was making its way into Seattle. Woodinville, a town located just northwest, was growing rapidly as the logging industry began moving in. In addition, Redmond, a town located just south, was also growing. Redmond was growing fast and this growth caused it to establish trading posts around the area in the late 1880s. One eventually came to Cottage Lake. As the logging industry cleared land, more people moved in. Over the next 100 years, the community would develop and take shape.
Today
Today the population is nearly 23,000 people. Many more than the Neilsen family could have ever imagined. The community prides itself on its beauty located on the far Northeastern edge of the Seattle metropolitan area. The community has expanded out a long ways from the lake, but the lake still plays an important role in the city’s identity.
