About Everett, WA

History

Everett, WA is located on land that was first surrendered to the United States government in 1855 in the Treaty of Point Elliot. European settlement began shortly after in 1861. Dennis Brigham was the first settler of European ancestry to build next to Port Gardner Bay. Settlers sparsely moved into the area over the next few years and in 1890, the town was planned. The idea for the town began as an industrial peninsula city of the Hewitt-Colby Group. In May 1893, the town was officially incorporated. The initial belief that the city would be an industrial powerhouse in the region soon waned as the Great Northern Railroad passed by the town and ended at the Puget Sound in Seattle. Although the city never grew into what it was believed it would, it still played a significant role in the western U.S. due to its location on the coast and the Snohomish River. The city capitalized on the Yukon Gold Rush by building several riverboats that would ferry supplies through the mountains in the northwest.

Today

Today the city plays an important role in the surrounding area and is even the county seat of Snohomish County. It is the seventh largest city in the state of Washington with a population of 103,000. In 2002, the National Civic League awarded the All-America City Award it. It is home to the largest public marina on the west coast. Major industry has moved in to the city, the most notable of which is Boeing Airplanes assembly plant. The U.S. Navy built and opened Naval Station Everett there in 1992 and is the homeport for the Nimitz Carrier fleet. The port is still a major part of the city and brings international trade and jobs, as well as recreation. The region is known for its mild climate, including its dry-warm summer, very similar to a Mediterranean climate.

City Demographics

The city is primarily white with about 25 percent of the city being various minority groups. About 30 percent of the city is families. The average age is 34 years old. Everett has suffered however from the nation’s opioid epidemic and has even sued Purdue Pharma claiming that its product OxyContin was distributed by the company with gross negligence and has caused significant damage to the community.

Things to Do

The city is home to lots of green space for its residents and visitors. One of the most notables is the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens. This arboretum includes many diverse gardens and sculptures. In addition to the arboretum there is also the Nishiyama Garden. This Japanese style garden is located at the local community college. Nature lovers in the area head to Jetty Island during the summer to take in the 45 bird species that calls the island home. While visiting the island it is also possible to see gray whales in the spring. Everett is also home to over 40 parks in addition to the ones mentioned and the waterfront is one of the most visited places in the town.
