About Maltby, WA
Maltby is a small population area located in Snohomish County in the northwest of Washington. Maltby is surrounded by larger popular Seattle suburbs of the greater Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metro territory. In 2010, the population of the community was 10,830 residents, but today the population is well over 11,000 residents. Similar to other populated areas in the county, the population of Maltby continues to increase but the community remains unincorporated. Surprisingly, the population of the area is larger than some of the towns in Snohomish County. The community has been declared a census-designated place (CDP) by the United States Census and there are currently no plans for the community to become a town.
The area of Snohomish county was once a densely wooded landscape with scattered small tranquil lakes. During the 20th century, the forests of the county were gradually logged as the paper mill industry boomed. After the area was completely logged and there was a dramatic change in landscape, small farms began to pop up and small communities were established. The community of Maltby was settled in 1887. The community was named after a local real estate developer, Robert Maltby. The greater county name Snohomish comes from the Snohomish Native American tribe, who were originally settled in the territory prior to the logging period. The meaning of the word Snohomish is unclear and despite much research, remains a topic of great debate.
Today the community of Maltby is a very popular place to settle for those looking to be just outside of busy city life of Seattle. There are nearly 3,000 households in the community and 75% of them are home to married couples living together. Over 40% of these households are home to children under the age of 18 years. The average household size is between 2-3 people. Individuals between the ages of 45-65 years make up over 60% of the population. The racial-ethnic composition of Maltby is not very diverse. Ninety percent of residents are white, 3% are Asian, and the remaining 7% is a mix of small proportions of different races.
For those looking to work in Seattle and commute, the commute is very reasonable, just over 20 minutes. Even though it is less expensive than the city, the median cost of a home has continued to increase over the last 10 years. Many of these homes are built on larger properties, ranging from 1⁄2 acre to 4 acres in size. Maltby has a higher cost of living than 55% of communities in the United States. Besides those commuting to Seattle, the community is also home to employees of Boeing and Microsoft. This may be due to the community’s ease of access to highway 405 or interstate 5. Besides being a very popular place for Seattle commuters, Maltby and this area north of Seattle is popular for weekend getaways. The community is also home to the winner of the award winning Maltby Cafe. The popular breakfast and lunch spot is famous for their homemade Cinnamon Rolls, which are made fresh daily.
