About Marysville, WA

History

Marysville, Washington was originally established as a trading post in 1872 by James P. Comeford. Comeford was the local Indian agent appointed by the United States government. The original post was on the newly established Tulalip Indian Reservation which was created by the 1855 Point Elliot Treaty. The logging industry had already been moving into the area and clearing land at that time. Comeford’s trading post accepted business from both the logging companies and the reservation. In 1874, Comeford began expanding the footprint of the trading post by acquiring over one thousand acres of timber land. He quickly cleared it to make way for a settlement. The settlement remained nearly empty until 1883 when through some trickery; Comeford was able to secure a post-office and school district for the settlement. Over the next few years, the settlement established a sawmill and the population began to steadily grow. In 1891, the town of was officially incorporated to the delight of the roughly 400 residents. The city continued to expand over the next few years, with the building of three additional sawmills. 1891 also saw the Great Northern Railway’s construction pass right through the town. This connected the four sawmills with a lucrative trading market. At its peak, ten sawmills operated in the city. During this time it was also discovered that the land surrounding the city was fertile for agriculture, in particular strawberries. The city quickly earned the nickname “Strawberry City”. Over the next century, the city would remain relatively unchanged with a population of around 1,500 residents.

Today

The city began to grow during the late 20 th century due to its proximity to the surrounding cities of Everett and Seattle. When Interstate 5 was completed, it became possible to live in Marysville and work in the larger cities. The city began to expand in the 1970’s and 80’s as the metropolitan region began to suburbanize. Strawberry fields began being converted into housing subdivisions and the population began to rise. Today the population is around 60,000. It is the 2nd largest city in Snohomish County. The sawmills that the city once depended on have been torn down and residential amenities and commercial centers have been built in their place. It is one of the more desirable cities in Washington to live as evidenced by the fact that it is the fastest growing city in the state. Residents enjoy proximity to Seattle and Everett, while still enjoying a quiet Pacific Northwest community.
