About Medina, WA

History

Medina is located in King County, Washington. The community is apart of the Eastside Region of the Seattle metropolitan area. The land was occupied by various Native American tribes for several centuries before white settlers began moving in and displacing them. The region attracted settlers because of it offered a rugged pioneer lifestyle and an abundance of natural resources that were for the taking. In 1855, the United States government signed the Treaty of Point Elliot with the tribes of the region paving the way for settlers to move onto the land.

Medina was first settled in 1891 by T.L. Dabney. The community got its start as a landing on the banks of Lake Washington, which served as the crossing point between the Eastside Region and Seattle. As Bellevue and Seattle grew, so did Medina and the rest of the area. Residents could live in the community and commute by boat to Seattle for work. As the community grew, the residents decided it needed a name. Dabney insisted that the name be Floridine, but the several women appointed by the residents to choose a name wanted the name Madeena, which was to be in reference to the Arabian City with the same name. Dabney was not happy about it, so for days he and the women took turns changing the sign at the landing from Floridine to Madeena and back again. Eventually the name Medina stuck. In 1914, the land was platted and the town took on its own identity. It was officially incorporated in 1955.

Today

Today the population is around 3,000 people. It is known for its beautiful shoreline along Lake Washington. It is also known for its famous residents including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, as well as several executives. Their mansions line the shores of Lake Washington and visitors take boat tours to gaze at them from the water.

Things to do

Medina is primarily residential so much of what there is to do lies outside of the community itself. Residents and visitors can easily get to Seattle or Bellevue which both offer their own unique experience. Many residents of the community do take advantage of its coastline along Lake Washington though. The lake is a great place to spend a summer afternoon, boating, fishing, or swimming.

The Pacific Northwest is known for its proximity to nature and the region of Bellevue is no exception. The eastside of Lake Washington is full of nature parks and recreation areas. Some of the most well known are the Bridle Trails State Park, Mercer Slough Nature Park, Squak Mountain State Park Natural Area, Lake Sammamish State Park, Saint Edward State Park, Marymoor Park, Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, and the Bellevue Botanical Garden. There are also several museums including the KidsQuest Children’s Museum, Museum of Flight, and the Cougar Mountain Zoo.

Across Lake Washington from Medina is Washington’s largest city, Seattle. Seattle is home to top restaurants, amazing nightlife, world-class shopping, and several recreational spots. No matter what you are looking for you will be able to find it in the city and it is only a short boat ride away.
