About Queen Anne, Seattle, WA

History

Queen Anne Hill is the highest named point in the Seattle metropolitan area. It sits just to the Northwest of the city center and has a rich history. The first settlers to claim land on the hill were the Denny family. David and Louisa made this claim in 1853 and were quickly followed by many other settlers including the famous Thomas Mercer and Dr. Henry Smith, both of which play prominent roles in Seattle’s history.

The hill really began to grow after the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the late 1880s. The hill’s popularity grew fast because it sat above the stink and hustle of the harbor. The prevailing coastal breeze also meant constant fresh air, so Seattle’s more affluent settlers began to stake out space on top of the hill. This movement really took off once the first cable car up the hill was built in 1890. The name of the hill came from the Victorian style houses the new residents were building. The rest of the hill’s history is directly connected to Seattle’s. As Seattle grew into the major metropolitan area it did, the hill grew with it.

Today

Today the hill still maintains an old feel. The views are unobstructed and the steep grade has made it hard for large apartment buildings to move in. Nearly 30,000 people live in the neighborhood though. It is located just on the edge of the city’s downtown corridor and borders Elliot Bay to the West. Most residents work in Seattle and its old town feel makes it a desirable place to live.
