Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

We all want to look our best. Whether this means going to the gym, eating healthy or having our teeth professionally whitened, we take pride in our appearance. With cosmetic dentistry, your teeth can look their absolute best.

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that deals primarily with cosmetic procedures. These are the procedures that are intended to boost the appearance of a patient’s teeth.

What Are the Some Common Procedures?

Cosmetic dentistry consists of a variety of different procedures that fix a patient’s smile, while sometimes also resolving certain oral health issues. Some of the most common forms of cosmetic dentistry include:

Tooth Implants

A tooth implant is used to fill a space where a tooth is missing. This may be due to the tooth being knocked out, falling out or even needing to be pulled due to decay. Whatever the reason may be, dental implants can be installed—as long as the jawbone is healthy enough to support them. The process of having an implant placed involves a titanium rod being installed into the jawbone, which is then attached to a false tooth via an abutment.

This new tooth can be made to closely resemble the surrounding, healthy teeth—completing a patient’s smile, while easily going unnoticed.

Teeth Whitening

Another service that patients enjoy is teeth whitening. While teeth whitening isn’t necessary for oral health, it is great for boosting self-esteem. If you have a tooth or teeth that have yellowed due to tobacco use, coffee or tea, teeth whitening may be an excellent option for you.

Dental Crowns

Sometimes the crown of a tooth will be damaged or compromised to a degree that a dental veneer or bonding is not an option. If the root of the tooth is still healthy, though, having a dental crown placed may be an option.

Dental crowns not only help with the cosmetic appearance of a tooth, but they also help to give additional support to a patient’s bite.

Invisalign

When people think of braces, they often think of metal brackets and wires. Invisalign is an excellent alternative to traditional braces, as Invisalign braces are clear plastic. This makes them appear nearly invisible! They are a little more expensive than traditional braces, but they are also very durable and easy to remove for cleaning and while eating.

Can My Dentist Perform These Procedures?

While some dentists are able to provide cosmetic dentistry services, not all dentists can provide certain services. For instance, braces are best handled by orthodontists. Your general dentist may be able to handle services such as whitening, placing dental crowns and even installing implants. Still, which cosmetic services your dentist provides depends on their specialty.

Finding a Specialist

For services your general dentist is unable to fulfill, ask for a referral to a specialist. Your general dentist may be able to refer you to an excellent cosmetic specialist. For improvements to the look of your teeth, speak with your dentist about cosmetic dentistry.
